Is Crock Pot Pulled Pork Any Good?

Paul Yates
After leaving university I got a job in the South many miles away from my home town so I had to set up my new home. It took me a while to find the place that I wanted but once settled I started about doing it up and making it mine.
My parents were extremely supportive. My father helped with the DIY and my mother helped equip my kitchen. Amongst the many pots and pans that got handed down was a slow cooker and I have to say that it got put in the cupboard and never saw the light of day.
Leading a busy life, it was my first job and I was putting lots of hours in so little time was left for cooking and for sure I didn't leave enough time in a morning to throw some ingredients into the slow cooker so that when I got home something warm was waiting for me.
Looking back, the fashion over the last few years with the advent and coming of age of the TV celebrity chef has been very much fresh ingredients and freshly cooked food so the crock pot really wasn't getting any air time. When I got married that was it, there just simply wasn't enough cupboard space for the crock pot and it was killed and went off to join the other slow cookers in the sky.
But wait! I've now discovered what truly is slow cooker heaven and maybe if I repent by writing this article I may at last be redeemed. I've always been into outdoor grilling and comparatively recently got into the low and slow techniques used by meat smokers and as I've learned more and more about the process it's become clear how the two types of cooking are intertwined.
When you break it down to the essentials, barbecue cooking is all about slow roasting over a long period of time in a humid atmosphere whilst passing smoke over the meat. Now I accept that passing smoke through a crock pot isn't going to happen but the rest of it can, after all what is a crock pot if it isn't a low temperature, humid oven?
Since this revelation I've tried many slow cooker or crock pot barbecue recipes and I have to say that the results are excellent. Certainly when it's winter time, it's freezing cold and the wind is howling I much prefer my barbecue in the slow cooker. I've done slow cooker barbecue pork ribs to great effect but my favorite has to be crock pot BBQ pulled pork because it's just so easy to do.
All you need is a pork shoulder in your crock pot with 4 fluid ounces of water and a good dose of salt and pepper. Stick it on high for an hour, then turn down to low for the next eight hours and you'll end up with true fall off the bone tenderness.
Shred it with a couple of forks or bear paws and serve in a bun with a BBQ coleslaw salad and lashings of your favorite homemade barbecue sauce. Try it, you might just be surprised at how good it really is.

Friday Night Lights Badge

What would Friday night be without high school football? Let us go ahead and answer that question. It would suck! Friday night was already pretty sweet. School's done for the weekend and you finally have some time without constant barrage of homework (really??? 3 hours a night. Really???). It's your time. High schoolers still like to have fun, right? Yes they do and prep football is siren call of fun for the weekend to start. We love Friday night and it wouldn't be the same without the Friday Night Lights of the big name. We wanted a Prep Sport badge that reflected the energy and buzz that builds as Friday progresses along till your smack in the big lights.
Before we jump into Friday Night LIghts, what exactly is a badge? First of all, you don't wear it or pin it to the wall unless by wall, you mean your Prep Sport Player Profile wall. The badge is our way of giving a shout out to any visitors for what you're in to. We're starting with 15 and it will only grow from there as we continue to see cool stuff online by sport. You can switch em out any time so don't worry about committing to one. The badges are your playground. Now let's look at Friday Night Lights more closely.
The badge takes place against a black background to reflect the fact that most high school football games occur at night and indoor. Yea, Texas high school football may have astroturf but they're not in indoor stadiums...yet. We'll give that another 5 - 10 years for those football fanatics. As the animation continues you see big flood lights...a beacon of outdoor football, sway across the badge. There are two running light effects down the top and left that interact with the the words "Friday Night" on the left and "Lights" on the right. The lights tend to flicker in and out as the animation continues. Here at prepSportFantasy.com, we love the first moment when the big flood lights are turned on. There's that big "snap" sound and the lights slowly warm up inconsistently. It means we're getting closer. Closer to the hits, the runs, the catches. The lights are talking and what they're saying is that some serious fun is about to come our way. The animation loops back around with the light effect and that's the badge.
Part of the what makes high school football cool is that it's usually played at night and outdoors. That's why you need the big lights to begin with. If you think about it, what else in the life of a high schooler requires giant arrays of floodlights other than prep football? There must be something important in order to ramp up those massive lighting giants. Yea, we've heard of Friday Night Lights in tv shows and movies but to the average high school student, player, or fan...the real show is right there in their home town...under the lights.
